Why World Population Growth Is Slowing — and When It Will Stop

Both things are true at once. The world's population has never been larger — and its growth has rarely been slower in modern times. Understanding how both can hold is the key to reading almost every demographic headline of the next fifty years.
The peak nobody noticed
In percentage terms, world population growth peaked around 1963, at about 2.12% per year. Today it runs at 0.91% — less than half the peak rate, and falling steadily. The absolute numbers stayed high for decades after the rate peaked for a simple reason: the base kept growing. Two percent of three billion people is smaller than one percent of eight billion. That arithmetic — a shrinking rate applied to an enormous base — is why the counter still climbs impressively while demographers talk about the end of growth.
What actually changed: fertility
The engine of the slowdown is the number of children per woman. Across almost every country, in every region, on every income level, fertility has fallen for two generations. The drivers are consistent wherever it happens: children survive (when child mortality falls, families no longer need many births to be sure of grown children), girls stay in school longer, more people live in cities where children are costlier, and contraception makes family size a decision. None of these reverse easily — which is why fertility decline, once underway, has proven durable in nearly every country that has experienced it.

Why growth continues anyway: momentum
If a majority of humanity lives in below-replacement countries, why does the population still grow by 69.26 million a year? Demographic momentum. Decades of high fertility left the world with an unusually large generation of young adults; even at modest fertility per person, a very large cohort of parents produces a lot of babies. Population keeps rising for a generation or two after fertility falls below replacement, the way a ship keeps moving after the engines cut. Momentum is also why the slowdown is so predictable: the parents of the 2040s are already born and counted.
Where it ends
The United Nations' medium projection — the same series charted on this site's world page — has the world crossing 9 billion around 2037, peaking near 10.28 billion in the 2080s, and then beginning a slow decline. If that holds, people alive today will see something no human has ever seen: a sustained, voluntary decrease in the number of people on Earth, driven not by catastrophe but by billions of private family decisions.
The honest caveat: the further out the date, the wider the uncertainty, and small differences in fertility assumptions compound into billions of people by 2100 — a subject treated properly in how population projections actually work.
